Open Museums with

API Culture Days

Goal 3: Make culture and heritage accessible, usable and relevant for the upcoming generations

Two days of conferences and workshops organised by We Are Museums, in collaboration with Biin Lab
Breaking barriers of entry is no longer enough to transmit the cultural values and knowledge they possess. Museums need to embrace and advocate for policies of total openness of their collections. This means having zero limits on space, time, use, or ownership, as well as using the power of data to enhance everyone's accessibility to cultural heritage. The coming age means navigating both open APIs and artificial intelligence. New literacy, guidance and adaptations are required to protect yesterday and tomorrow's culture.
Our actions
API Culture Day 1 (2019, Lyon, France)
To work towards smart and sustainable openness of culture's data, we launched the API Culture Day in collaboration with the french startup biinlab. It aims to raise awareness on the potential of open APIs today in a time of Open-Data and Artificial Intelligence.

The first edition was organised at the Fine Arts Museum of Lyon in France on June 28th 2019. During this day of reflection and inspiration around the use of APIs in culture, we tried to understand how the promotion and mediation of heritage are being changed with the opening of museum data and their APIs and with the new uses of machine learning.

Format: 3 keynotes from museum experts + a collaborative workshop to identify the museum's needs in new mediation tools fostered by open APIs and produce first prototype.

Experts: Isabelle Reusa, API consultant, Curator APIDays and Ex. RMN (France), Philippe Rivière, in charge of digital technology at Paris Museums (France), Diane Drubay, Founder of We Are Museums (France)

API Culture Day 2 (2019, Berlin, Germany)
The second edition of API Culture Day has been organised in Berlin starting on December 10th at the Humboldt Forum, in collaboration with Stadtmuseum Berlin and supported by Yunow. It aims to introduce and support Berlin museums to open access and open APIs from the practical side to the systemic change. As well as create a platform to discuss open access for culture with the museums of Berlin and accelerate the adoption of the licencing policies and tools for openness.

We gathered a dozen professionals from the Berlin cultural scene to run different reflection workshops inspired by the presentations by Michal Čudrnák, Slovenská Národná Galéria (Slovakia) and Vincent Autin, co-founder, Yunow (France) on the state of the open access for culture in 2020.
